Children are welcome at La Bluefin. We have plastic plates, bowls and glasses, but no other child or toddler equipment (no pack and play or crib, no high chair, etc.). The house is built on a high cliff with no fence or guard rail, but a 15-20 foot wide area of shrubs and bushes at the edge of the lot creates a natural barrier (except in the area of the lookout, which would need supervision). The house is approximately 100 meters (300 feet) from the road. There is a large playground with unique handmade play equiment that children love 2 km away from La Bluefin.

Dogs (maximum 2) are welcome but need to be disclosed at the time of booking. A separate agreement will need to be signed (please review our pet rules on our policies page). Cats and other animals are not allowed. Any undisclosed pet on the property will result in the forfeit of the security deposit.

The house is on a high cliff with no direct access to water. There are several beaches nearby (5-10 minutes driving distance), and Smugglers Cove Provincial Park (500 metres from the property) has a staircase that goes to the water.

Southwest Nova Scotia has a temperate climate. It is one of the warmest regions in Canada during the winter (although the wind chill factor is not to be overlooked). Spring and fall are mild and pleasant. In summer, the average daytime temperature is 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit) and the evenings are cool. Our location on the coast, exposed to the wind, means that there are very few mosquitoes.

La Bluefin has excellent fiber optic internet service.

Two smart TVs are provided (one in the living room, one in the master bedroom) to use with your own personal streaming accounts should you wish to do so. No cable service or streaming subscriptions are included.

Depending on your cell phone provider, reception inside the house may be poor. Turn on the wifi calling feature if this is the case.

La Bluefin does not have air conditioning. The average summer temperature is about 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit) during the day and drops below 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) at night. Sometimes the temperature inside the house rises in the late afternoon as the sun is setting directly in front of the patio doors. Simply open the patio doors and windows to let in the cool breeze from the sea, and close the curtains if needed. The temperature inside becomes comfortable again once the sun goes down.

A firepit is provided with wood and kindling for a first campfire. Be aware of the wind strength and direction and always check if a ban is in effect before starting a fire.

We had to take into account the strong winds in the outdoor design of La Bluefin. We have a heavy octagonal picnic table with discontinuous benches (no need to step over the bench to sit on it), and wooden Adirondack chairs. The chairs are left outside from April to October. During the winter, they will be stored in the shed – guests are welcome to use them but are asked to put them away before they leave. We do not have a barbecue.

La Bluefin is a strictly non-smoking and smoke-free property. Smoking/vaping is prohibited everywhere on the property, including outdoors. Failure to comply with this policy will result in the loss of the security deposit and may result in the cancellation of the bookin and immediate termination of the stay without refund. Additional charges for removing cigarette butts and eliminating odor may also be charged.

We are not responsible for the weather, nor for the loss of services (electricity, Internet, etc.) that weather conditions may cause. Our house is located in a rural area, and it may take several hours or even days before the power is restored. Please plan accordingly if bad weather is forecasted during your stay. Travel cancellation insurance is highly recommended, especially if you plan to travel during the North Atlantic hurricane season (June through November, especially mid-August through the end of October) or the Nor’Easter winter storms season (December through March).

The wind on the coast can be surprising. Be mindful of what you leave outside. Always close the windows before leaving the house. Be careful with the front door (which opens outward and can catch in the wind); when it is very windy, it is easier to use the patio doors.

The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world. The landscape in our area is very different at high tide than at low tide. If you explore the coastline and shoreline at low tide, always be aware of the tides, as a passage may become inaccessible when the water returns.

Our vacation home is registered in the province of Nova Scotia (RYA-2023-24-03270958296224851-7755).
